30538 1962-03-19 Uckfield

The former LB&SCR station at Uckfield in Sussex sees Ex-SR Richard Maunsell 'Q' class 0-6-0 No. 30538 shunting the yard in March 1962. The 20 locomotives in the class were built at Eastleigh in 1938-9 and were withdrawn by 1965. To improve steaming, Bulleid fitted several with the Lemaitre blast pipe. It was later found that the BR Standard Class 4 plain blast pipe & chimney were even more successful at improving steaming and fuel consumption. One, (30541) has been preserved at the Bluebell Railway.
