4706 1959-08-29 Paddington

GWR 47xx No.4706 1.25pm Paddington-Paignton leaving Paddington on August 29, 1959.

Peter Kerslake says "A classic portrait of 4706 heading away from Paddington and passing Ranelagh Yard on a Saturday express to the Westcountry in 1959.
Use of these "4700" class locomotives on such Top Link workings by the Shedmaster and Running Foremen at Old Oak Common was not uncommon, especially on Saturdays in the Summer Services when "Castles" and "Kings" were rostered to other such duties, and one became a regular sight in their last years of service particularly on the Saturday "Royal Duchy", working down as far a Plymouth.
4706 was built in 1923 and lasted in service until being withdrawn from Old Oak Common in February of 1964, ending her days in Swindon's infamous "C" Shop, where so many of the larger classes met their end."
