60887 60932 1964-09-27 Swindon Works

Peter Kerslake says "With the mass withdrawal of steam locomotives in the early 'sixties many Works were stretched beyond their capabilities in disposing of condemned engines.
Swindon seemed to get through the scrapping process rather more speedily, even though the boys there didn't like cutting up their "Kings", with a number of that particular class languishing within the Works confines for some considerable period of time before meeting the cutters' torches in "C" Shop.
The strange sight of a large number of Eastern Region "V2" locomotives on Swindon's "Dump" all awaiting their end would have been an unexpected bonus for the enthusiasts of the day, the V2s went to Swindon so the tenders could be converted into snowploughs which explains why none of the locos in the line for scrapping had them. I clearly remember, and recording on film, this particular sight in October 1964.
