Tony Roberts says "I wonder if this four coaches forms what my father used to call "The Parlay"? He was a Mineral Guard at Doncaster brought up in Carlton-on-Trent. The train, in both directions, was regularly used by my sister and I visiting relations at Carlton, Newark and Grantham in our young days and stopped at all stations. Yes, it was safe for us to do that on our own in those days, even during the war. Memories of the bombers gathering over Lincoln in the evenings and German bombs landing between us and the River Trent too!

Memory now stirred remembering station names en-route, many of course no longer exist. Leaving Doncaster there was: Rossington, Bawtry, Scrooby(not always stopping), Ranskill, Barnby Moor and Sutton(a wooden structure during hostilities), Retford, Tuxford (North I think?), Dukeries Junction, Crow Park(for Sutton-on-Trent where we sometimes got off), Carlton-0n-Trent (more often used as it was a shorter walk for our little legs!), Newark, Claypole, Hougham and its Troughs (the rails used to sing along that stretch of railway, the earthworks being worked on frequently in those days) and on to Grantham.

What's left in 2014? Doncaster, Retford, Newark(or New York as dad use to say) and Grantham."
