Ripon is one of very few British cities to be without a railway. The Leeds to Thirst and Northallerton route opened in June 1848 and closed to passengers in March 1967. This was followed by closure to freight in September 1969. In happier days, ex-North Eastern Railway W.Worsdell 'D20' class 4-4-0 No. 62395 pilots an unidentified 'A3' 4-6-2 with a Leeds train in the 1950s. A rather gloomy day adds to the ambience!
