The climb from Todmorden via Portsmouth to Copy Pit Summit was an all-out battle for westbound coal trains climbing the heavy gradient into Lancashire from the Yorkshire coalfields. This anonymous Riddles 'WD' is seemingly on top of its task as it passes Portsmouth box and crossing.
