4052 1938c Shrewsbury

GWR Star class 4-6-0 No 4052 Princess Beatrice stands in Shrewsbury station after arrival with the Ramsgate to Birkenhead through train in c1938.

Peter Kerslake says "A superb portrait of "Star" 4052 "Princess Beatrice" captured no doubt on a plate glass camera, hence the splendid degree of detail and sharpness of the image, so characteristic of the large format glass negatives of the period.
The sunshine helps and 4052 has been turned out nicely for this duty, coupled to a 4000 gallon tender and with the noticeable absence of outside steam pipes evident in this view although those of the "Castle" design were later fitted to 4052 by Swindon in April of 1939.
"Princess Beatrice" had been one of the largest batches of "Stars" to emerge from Swindon Works, being one of the fifteen built during the Summer of 1914 and she lasted in service until June of 1953."
