NER 957 1912 York MPD

NER 957 1912 York MPD

Ex-North Eastern Railway '957' (LNER 'X2') class 2-2-4 Tank No. 957. Built at Gateshead in 1903 as a rebuild of a Fletcher 'BTP' 0-4-4 Tank. Enlarged tanks were added in 1907 and the locomotive was withdrawn in April 1937 as LNER No. 957.

One of four 2-2-4 Tanks rebuilt by the NER into locomotives with a similar appearance (though from very different original types), 957 is seen resting at York MPD in 1912. The duties were specifically to haul District Superintendent's inspection saloons, 957 being allocated to Hull. It became the last 'Single' to work in Britain when withdrawn in 1937. Note the W.Worsdell 'R' class 4-4-0 No. 2107 behind the very intrusive signal guy rope.
