3840 1960s Kemble Tunnel
Leaving south end of Kemble Tunnel, the Palvans leading the train were less successful than the 2-8-0!
A nice portrayal of 3840 seen here on the main Gloucester to Swindon line at Kemble but with a nasty oil leak from her superheater cover on the smokebox side.
Mr. Churchward's original design of the class dating back to the first production engine emerging from Swindon in 1905 was continued by Mr. Collett with later versions having a number of modifications , the cabside windows seen here being but just one.
Examples of the class were spread far and wide over the Western network but unusually none were based at Cornish Motive Power Depots , but with their principal role being for use on heavy coal freight workings many were to be found allocated to Depots within South Wales over many years.
