3840 1965-06-02 Horton Road

Peter Kerslake says "My picture of 3840 here on Gloucester's Horton Road Depot shows the final development of the class of Heavy Freight engines initially brought into service in 1905 and eventually totalling 168 in number.
Various modifications to the class over the years produced an engine which was a true "Maid of all Work", capable of hauling heavy coal trains, as was the intention of Mr. Churchward when he designed the class back in 1903, to appearing on fast fitted perishables and parcels traffic and even , on rare instances, working a passenger duty.
Distinctive by their cabside windows, the "2884" series came into traffic from Swindon Works between 1938 and 1942 and were numbered from 2884 to 3866.
Twenty of the class, namely twelve of the original series and eight of the later, were converted to burn oil instead of coal with 2872 being the first conversion in September of 1948 whilst the final one so modified was 2834 in early 1950.
Those converted engines were renumbered 4800 to 4811 and 4850 to 4874, taking those numbers from the little "1400" series of small tank engines".
