On Train 434 a Waterloo-Lymington The duty 26 board has 12-0 chalked below.
James Bourdreau explains "434 is the Train not Duty number. Duty numbers were always on one of the discs- it is 26 in this case. The chalked inscription above the train number is its departure time from its starting station in this case Waterloo. So in this case 30936 is on the 12.00 Waterloo-Lymington Pier, train number 434, duty 26. Apart from a few Schools at Redhill or Brighton all Schools were off the Eastern or Central division at this time either at Nine Elms or Basingstoke. On the SR train numbers were always on a rectangular board generally attached to the top smokebox lamp bracket (and often annoyingly covering the smokebox number) with occasionally the departure chalked above it. Duty numbers would be on on of the route discs. This could provide a lot of information provided everything shown was correct".
