NBR 878 1910s Perth (NBR) MPD

North British Railway Reid 'I' (LNER 'C10') class 4-4-2 No. 878 'Hazeldean'. Built by NBL of Glasgow in August 1906 and withdrawn in November 1936 as LNER No. 9878.

These superb 'Atlantics' were the magnum opus of Matthew Reid's tenure as CME of the NBR. Built in three batches (with detail differences) from 1906 to 1922 the class totalled 22 examples when complete. They all received a wonderful array of very 'Scottish' names, all but seven of which were inherited by Gresley's 'P2' Mikados and subsequently Thompson's 'A2' and Peppercorn's 'A1' 4-6-0s though 'Hazeldean' was not thus honoured! Here she is by the turntable at Perth's North British MPD circa 1910.

Restored from an original period 8"x10" print.
