3266 1936-10-18 Didcot MPD
Great Western Railway Dean '3252' or 'Duke' class 4-4-0 No. 3266 'Amyas'. Built at Swindon in Aug. 1896 as GWR No. 3272, re-numbered to 3266 in Dec. 1912 and withdrawn in March 1938. The renowned 'Duke' class of William Dean typified the later Victorian era of express 4-4-0 on the Great Western. Many modifications and modernisations were carried out during their lives. 'Amyas' stands in the shed yard at Didcot MPD in October 1936. The pannier tank alongside worked into local ordnance and provender factories and was spark-arrestor fitted for safety. 'Amyas' was the hero of Charles Kingsley's novel 'Westward Ho!'
