4920 1950s Churston
Dumbleton Hall is departing Churston bound for Paignton. Based on the lamp code she's working a through portion of an up express that will be attached to other carriages that have come from Cornwall or Plymouth at either Newton Abbot or Exeter St. Davids. School Children playing outside Churston Grammar School, opened in 1957, suggest this was a late 1950's photograph.
Destined to be the oldest of her class still in service right up to the end of Western Region steam at the end of 1965 I captured 4920 on film on Gloucester's Horton Road shed on 4th . January , 1965 , looking well past her best , that photograph being included on this Web Site .
A colour picture of 4920 from October , 1965 shows her to have red backed cabside numberplates , a feature , if I am correct , of locomotives which have passed through Worcester Works , so perhaps she had a late overhaul at Worcester .
Saved from the cutters' torches , 4920 was restored at Buckfastleigh , subsequently working main line Specials as well as performing on the Buckfastleigh to Totnes branch and she is at Buckfastleigh now , ready for a further overhaul and hopefully a return once again to service.
