4975 1958-06-28 Dainton
GWR Hall 4-6-0 No 4975 Umberslade Hall pilots 6023 King Edward II with the 8.35am from Falmouth passing Dainton on 28 June 1958.
Peter Kerslake says "A very fine photograph indeed here on the climb to Dainton tunnel, the gradient on this side of the incline a fearsome one in 37 at its steepest, indicated by the fact that the sidings here are on the level, in sharp contrast to the main line 6023 will have taken over this working at Plymouth North Road from the engine working up from Cornwall, assisted just as far as Newton Abbot by 4975, the load clearly more than the ten coach maximum for a "King" on its own over these banks.
The little Saxby and Farmer signal box with its distinctive rounded top windows dates back to the days of the days of the South Devon Railway, probably from about the late 1860's, and it survived until 1965 when it was replaced by a hideous modern unit known to railwaymen as the "Plywood Wonder".
The tall white post behind the engines holds a large mirror, used by the signalmen to see the tail end of ascending workings and ensure that nothing has fallen off the rear of the train as it enters the tunnel."
