6971 1960s Wednesbury

On the down at Wednesbury just north of the station. The big building in the background is The Patent Shaft Steel Works Limited Monway Works. The line in the foreground leads to the Wilingsworth Iron Co. works, which was a subsidiary of the Patent Shaft that had closed by 1961 and the line was used to access the Wagon Repairs Ltd wagon works. Patent Shaft closed in 1980 after nearly 150 years operation. Its origins as the name suggests were in the manufacture of a patented iron axle, the business expanding in the late 19th Century to produce wheels, tyres and other products for railways as well as producing the world's first steel bridges. In the 20th Century it came under the control of Metropolitan Cammell Railway Carriage and Wagon Company Limited and wagons, coaches and a few locomotives were built there.
