4920 1958-08-16 Stratford on Avon

4920 1958-08-16 Stratford on Avon

No.4920 Dumbleton Hall on 16th August 1958 at Stratford-on-Avon. It was built by the GWR in 1929 and Initially allocated to Old Oak Common, later moving to Oxford, Cardiff and Reading. It worked from Taunton shed from 1953 before transfer to Newton Abbot in December 1958. After withdrawal in 1965 No.4920 was sold for scrap to Woodham's scrapyard in Barry, South Wales, but was rescued by the ‘Dumbleton Hall Preservation Society’ in 1974 and restored at Buckfastleigh. The neatly chalked Reporting Numbers, put on twice, just for good measure, indicate that this is a working from the Kingswear line, bound for the North and running via Stratford on Avon, having come up on part of which is now the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire preserved line via Cheltenham.. If I am correct, therefore, it appears that 4920, Dumbleton Hall has worked right through from her home at Newton Abbot and has not been replaced at Bristol Temple Meads . 4920's subsequent preservation and restoration following withdrawal was made possible by funds raised by the sale of prints from a fine painting by Westcountry artist Don Breckon of this engine leaving Kingswear. 4920 is presently back again at Buckfastleigh, on the South Devon Railway, awaiting further restoration.
