88 OR&L Co. 1930s Ka'ena Point, Oahu Island, Hawaii

88 OR&L Co. 1930s Ka'ena Point, Oahu Island, Hawaii

Almost certainly a 'first' for Rail-Online is this stunning 1930s photograph of Alco 4-6-0 OR&LC No. 88, threading Hawaii's spectacular coastline at Ka'ena Point on Oahu Island. This Railway is the Oahu Railway & Land Co., a 3ft. gauge line inaugurated in 1889 principally for sugar cane transportation. Its full and fascinating history and demise can be found by searching Wikipedia. No. 88 was built by Alco in 1916 and was withdrawn by 1946. The tourist potential of this wonderful railway was never realised and it gradually fell into contraction after WW2 and the 1950s.
