5054 4099 1956-05-20 Laira

Devonport's 'Navy Days' in 1956 were held over the Whitsun Bank Holiday on Sunday 20th May and Canton's Earl of Ducie had worked down from Wales on a Navy Day special. It is coaled up ready to return home but the fitters seem to have been asked to attend to a minor problem. In the background is Penzance's 4099 Kilgerran Castle which had also brought in a Navy Day special, from Cornwall. 5054 was to later have an memorable end to her life , being the engine selected to work the final and fastest stage of the famous Special run on the 9th. May , 1964 and running from Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington where it arrived five minutes early after a very fast run up from Bristol. That " Earl of Ducie " was in such fine condition that day was even more suprising as she had gained a reputation as being a poor engine during a brief spell at Hereford earlier that same year , but a subsequent transfer to Worcester shed , and attention at the Works adjacent to that shed , had transformed her into being one of the best of the " Castles " selected for that day's Special . The remainder of 1964 saw 5054 on a number of Specials before she was withdrawn in October that same year
