7029 1965-03-08 Gloucester Horton Road
7029 "Clun Castle ", still in BR ownership is seen here taking water in one of a number of images I took that day at Gloucester Horton Road shed, the date being the 8th. March, 1965.
7029, according to my notes, was "receiving a lot of attention" that day but I was not able to ascertain its programmed working, my shot shows a number of footplate men looking on.
7029 was being called upon to work a number of Specials at this time , hence the painted buffer beam numberplate.
Just one of four "Castles" left in service at this time 7029 had already been "earmarked" for preservation and was in demand for Steam Specials as well as being used in the Gloucester area on freights. Just before Christmas of that year, in its final days with BR it was even used as a station pilot, marshalling wagons at Eastgate and Central stations at Gloucester!
