9004 1953c Machynlleth

This was the place to visit in the mid-1950s for any enthusiast seeking to record the remaining "Dukedogs" still operating on the Cambrian system having sixteen of the class on its books, including 9004 which later moved to 84J Croes Newydd, in June 1957 and was destined to be one of the last of the class remaining in service.
Built in August 1936 from the frames of "Bulldog" 3439 and "Duke" 3271 this "Dukedog" carried the nameplates Earl of Dartmouth until June 1937 when the plates were removed and the name used on newly built Castle 5047.
In its heyday Machynlleth had more than forty locomotives allocated there, but by 1965 its complement had dropped to less than ten and it finally closed to steam in December 1966, thereafter being reduced to a mere stabling point for Diesel Multiple Units.
The rake of coal wagons are within the corrugated iron coaling plant, which afforded the shed staff engaged on coaling duties some much needed protection from the wet weather for which this region was known; the main shed buildings are just visible in the background.
