9000 1940s Afon Wen

9000 1940s Afon Wen

Departing Afon Wen with an up train from Pwllheli . 9000 was the first " true " " Dukedog " constructed , the class using frames from condemned " Bulldogs " matched with boilers , cabs and fittings from similarly withdrawn " Duke " class engines , this first one emerging from Swindon in 1936 , the first of 28 built until the outbreak of the war in 1939 .under Mr .Collett's reign and originally numbered as 3200 , being renumbered in the " 9000 " series from 1946 .
9000 carried the name " Earl of Mount Edgecumbe " from being built until 1937 so this image is after 1937 but she's still in G.W.R. livery and pilot to an 0-6-0 side window fitted " 3200 " class , introduced in 1946 , so this photograph must be after 1946 but before Nationalisation in 1947 .
There are only four coaches in the formation , heading away from Pwllheli , but more will doubtless be added at Dovey Junction when the portion of this Shrewsbury bound working from Aberystwyth is added , hence the need for two engines .
