9017 1957-07 near Criccieth
Peter Kerslake says "What a splendid shot of "Dukedog" 9017 heading an "up" or eastwards passenger working away from Criccieth near Merllyn Crossing on a falling 1 in 82 gradient as it heads towards Portmadoc. One of the last of the class to be condemned in October of 1960 from Oswestry Depot, 9017 (3217 until 1946) was destined to be the only survivor. It had been allotted the named "Earl of Berkeley" but this was used instead on "Castle" 5060 in mid 1937, before 3217 was rebuilt in March 1938, the Castles being deemed more appropriate to carry such titled names. Today, however, 9017 carries "Earl of Berkeley" nameplates; these had been purchased in April 1963 when 5060 was withdrawn, the purchaser making the generous gift of the plates to the Bluebell Railway where 9017 had found a new home".
