9005 1950s Aberdovey

9005 1950s Aberdovey

With an early Wickham Trolley used by the local PW team. The method of moving off the track is well shown!

Peter Kerslake says "Constructed from the frames of "Bulldog" 3413 "James Mason" and the boiler , cab and fittings from a "Duke" class and entering service in 1936 this member of the "Dukedog" class ran with "Earl of Devon" nameplates until mid 1937 when all named examples of the class had their nameplates removed following objections from a number of the noble gentlemen who objected to seeing their names on what was considered to be nothing more than a freight locomotive of dubious ancestry, all such nameplates immediately being allocated to the new "Castles" under construction at Swindon.
9005 was one of sixteen of the remaining twenty two of her class still in service in 1956 allocated to Machynlleth and its important sub shed at Aberystwyth, with Oswestry having three and Swindon, Oxford and Croes Newydd all having just one each".
