CR 123 1959-09-08 Rutherglen station
On 8th September 1959, Nos 256 and 123 set off from Edinburgh (Princes St.) with a special train to Kelvin Hall in association with the Scottish Industries Exhibition (3rd-19th September 1959). En-route, at Shotts, No 256 failed and was taken off the train, leaving the single wheeler to carry on unaided as seen in this photograph, as far as Dalmarnock. Here the train is rounding the curve from WCML towards Dalmarnock.
There, assistance came in the form of Fairburn tank No 42217 which helped bring the train to its Kelvin Hall destination. Whatever had been ailing No 256 was not a major issue as the engine was put right and re-joined No 123 for the return trip to Edinburgh, later that evening.
