5657 1958-07-27 Newport

On a dreadful Welsh day.

Peter Kerslake says "A couple of enthusiasts look well protected in what looks to be a wet and dismal day here on Newport M.P.D. despite it being late July in 1958, with 5657 on its home depot.
This view shows clearly the massive inside cylinder block and combined smokebox saddle, a feature incorporated in the design by Mr. Collett in 1924 and which followed the design of the pre grouping Welsh Tank engines taken into G.W.R. stock.
These engines were frequently required to run bunker first, especially when working the Welsh Valley lines where there was often no turntable located at the end of the branch and the high coal bunkers together with their sliding cab window shutters fitted during their working lives contributed to some degree of protection from the elements for the footplate crews."
