6624 1961-08-06 Radyr

A busy scene at Cardiff's Radyr Depot with " Taffy Tank " " 5600 " class 6624 showing her lined green livery first applied to members of the class in late 1957 .
One of the later 1927 built batch of one hundred of the class, 6624 and her sisters were designed by Mr . Collett for work on the Welsh valley lines and proved to be popular engines, often working bunker first on those lines where no turning facilities existed and being fitted as seen here, with sliding cabside shutters to afford more protection for the footplate men when so working .
Radyr Depot housed some fifty or so Tank engines in its heyday and had been opened in late 1931, being a sub shed of Cardiff Cathays until late in 1957, but the two Depots exchanged roles in 1958 when Radyr became the main location, and Cathays was reduced to a sub shed status!
Radyr closed in July of 1965
