6687 1962-08-12 Swindon Works

Peter Kerslake says "All the backplate fittings have been removed from 6687's firebox together with her cab and coal bunker in this view at Swindon Works but her tanks and boiler are still in place, the locomotive having been the first of the one hundred strong of the second 1927 built series to be condemned in 1962, the year of this view, so there must have been a reason for her early end, possibly cracked main frames .
It was here on the "Dump" that the smaller classes were cut up, whilst larger tender engines were disposed of within the Works "C" shop.
Designed by Mr. Collett in 1924 primarily for use within the Welsh valleys his "Taffy Tanks" eventually totalled two hundred with one of the first to be built, 5605 soldiering on until 1966, the last to survive, so she must have been a good one!"
