CR 122 1922 Carlisle

CR 122 1922 Carlisle

Caledonian Railway McIntosh '139' class 4-4-0 No. 122. Built at St. Rollox in July 1912 and withdrawn in November 1953 as BR No. 54449.

The Caledonian Railway's many 4-4-0s always had a look of purposeful grandeur, enhanced by their striking blue liveries that (sadly) were long gone by the advent of colour photography. Fortunately, three Caledonian locomotives survive in preservation and thus all is not lost! 122 is seen departing northbound from Carlisle in 1922 with a fine rake of coaches. Note the Caledonian's use of 'route indicators' in front of the chimney.
