CR 44 1910s near Stanley Junction

John Farquharson McIntosh (1846-1918) was the CME of the Caledonian Railway from 1895 to 1914. He designed the ground-breaking 4-4-0s of the 'Dunalastair' classes of which there were five parts I, II, III, IV and Superheated IV (or 139 class). Each type being even more powerful and economical than its predecessor. This superb image near Stanley Junction in Perthshire, shows No. 44 of the latter class heading a modest Aberdeen to Edinburgh ordinary train circa 1914, the leading vehicle being a LNWR bogie open carriage truck. It was built at St. Rollox in 1913 and withdrawn as BR No. 54451 in Sept. 1955.
