1444 1955-04-24 Reading
Peter Kerslake says "1444 stands outside Reading shed with a 94xx for company -you can just make out 940x of its cabside plate and 9402/4/5 were all there at the time. After clearing the firebox a member of Reading Depot's shed staff has left his mark in white ash on what had been a sparking little 1444 so I trust that the Shedmaster was unaware of his failure to clean up his efforts !
Allocated to Reading at this time 1444 later ended its days whilst shedded at Gloucester's Horton Road Depot in late 1964 following a failure of one of its driving axles. I recorded 1444 still in service in August of 1964 after it had arrived from either Chalford or Sharpness, but it did not survive long enough to work to the end of either of those services, both of which were terminated on 31st August 1964.
Following withdrawal 1444 joined a number of her sisters and other condemned locomotives at Gloucester's former Midland Region Barnwood Motive Power Depot which was then used to house locomotives destined for the South Wales breakers' yards".
