1453 1964-10 Stroud

With trailer W242W forming the Chalford auto train

Peter Kerslake says "Gloucester Horton Road Depot's little "1400 " class worked not only on this , the Chalford service , but also the local passenger services to Sharpness by way of the main line down via Berkeley Rioad although in the latter years the destruction of the Severn railway bridge meant that they were no longer able to cross the Severn and run down into Lydney .
1453 seen here worked the Sharpness branch on its last day, namely Saturday the 31st of October 1964 which was also the final day of the Chalford services , with sister engines 1458 and 1472 sharing that day's final
services with Pannier Tank 6412.
Clearly shown in this view is the "Home made" replacement smokebox door number plate which 1453 carried during its later years in service.

Dated as being October of 1964 this fine view has Gloucester's 1453 taking water at Stroud during the final weeks of the Chalford services which ended on Saturday 31st October 1964.
1453 displays her "homemade" smokebox door numberplate which it had carried for a number of years previously and which it bore until its last working days, sharing these Chalford line duties with runs between Gloucester and Sharpness and having the honour of working the Sharpness services on that same Saturday when both Chalford and Sharpness services were ended.
1453 was then withdrawn, and in company with a number of her sisters, was stored out of use at Gloucester's former Midland Region Depot at Barnwood, that former shed having closed the previous month and thereafter being used to house withdrawn locomotives heading for the South Wales breakers' yards.
