1445 1964 Gloucester Barnwood
Withdrawn. Stored there between Sept and November before going to Bird's Risca.
Following its closure Gloucester Barnwood shed , formerly the home of Midland Region locomotives , was used as a temporary storage facility for withdrawn locomotives awaiting movement to the South Wales breakers' yards and its own Midland Region engines were stabled and serviced at the nearby Western Region shed at Horton Road.
1445 had been one of the last of her class to work the service between Gloucester Central and Chalford , through what was known locally as the " Golden Valley " , that service coming to an end on Saturday , 31st. October of 1964.
She is seen here during that month , now withdrawn and awaiting her fate at Barnwood shed.
I can now date this shot here at Gloucester's former L.MR. Depot as from 27th . October of 1964 .
A number of the little " 1400 " tanks ended their days at Gloucester as whereas their former branch line duties had ended at their earlier homes Gloucester Horton Road still had to service the Chalford , Sharpness and Hereford lines right up to 31st .October , 1964 when all three such workings ceased , finally bringing to an end the working lives of the handful of that Depot's remaining " 1400's " .
1445 seen here must have been withdrawn a few weeks earlier as was 1444 , the latter suffering a broken main axle .
My 1956 shedbook shows 1445 to have been allocated to Hereford at that time in company with 1455 and 1456 so she was probably still working that line from Gloucester up to her withdrawal.
