1453 1964-09-26 Berkeley Road
With Autotrailer W244W 8.15 service to Sharpness.
The end was in sight not only for little 1453 , seen here with a handmade replacement front numberplate which she had carried for over a year previously , but also for services between here at Berkeley Road and Sharpness as it all came to an end some eight weeks after this view .
What had been a busy line from the Welsh bank of the Severn through Sharpness with schoolchildren and locals providng a steady flow of traffic to and from Gloucester all came to an ubrupt end on the night of 25th . October , 1960 when the barge " Wastdale H ", loaded at Avonmouth with 350 tonnes of petrol for Worcester , together with a similar barge , the " Arkendale H " , sailing from Swansea up the Severn also to Worcester with heavy fuel oil , collided with the rail bridge at Sharpness , bringing down two spans and rupturing a main gas pipe in the resulting fire and explosion.
That was the end for through services across the Severn here , and 1453 was the last to work the now truncated Sharpness line on 31st .October , 1964 , being immediately withdrawn in company with her five sisters at Gloucester.
