1466 1950s Moretonhampstead

Moretonhampstead was the terminus of the branch from Newton Abbot , and 1466 seen here was one of four of her class allocated to that Depot in the mid ' fifties .
Allocated there for a number of years before a short spell prior to withdrawal at Taunton , 1466 was destined to become probably the most famous of her class , being bought by the founding members of what was later to become the Great Western Society in March of 1964 , initially being housed at Totnes , where the newly formed Society had a temporary home before a move to the present base at Didcot took place on a very damp and dismal 2nd. of December , 1967 .
The 75 members of the " 1400 " class , introduced in 1932 , had initially been numbered as 4800 to 4874 but these numbers were transferred to twenty of the " 2800 " and " 3800 "class heavy freight locomotives during 1946 when a number were converted to oil burners , the little tank engines becoming 1400 to 1474
