1466 1950s Churston
Working the Churston-Brixham service.
Pictured here on the Newton Abbot to Kingswear line at Churston , on the branch train for Brixham , 1466 was a true Westcountry member of the " 1400 " class , spending time working not only this line but also the branch lines to Moretonhampstead , Tiverton and Hemyock in the years from the ' fifties through to the ' sixties.
One of just four of her class to make it into preservation , 1466 truly has the most remarkable post withdrawal story to tell , having been purchased following withdrawal by four young enthusiasts who met regularly on the footbridge over the main lines at Southall, their plans for its purchase having begun as the result of their letter to the "Railway Magazine " of August 1961 in which they sought financial support from fellow enthusiasts.
Their efforts resulted in the 1961 purchase of 1466 and the formation of the " 4800 Preservation Society " which soon became the " Great Western Preservation Society " and then in 1963 today's " Great Western Society ".
