61659 1950 Colchester

Ex-LNER Gresley 'B17/5' class 4-6-0 No. 61659 'East Anglian'. Built at Darlington in June 1936 as LNER No. 2859 'Norwich City', re-named and streamlined in September 1937, streamlining removed in Jan. 1951. Withdrawn in Mar. 1960.

The distinctive gable ends of Colchester MPD are seen behind 'East Anglian' passing on a down express for Norwich in 1950. The streamlining was applied to the two 'B17's (61670 'City of London' was the other) more as a publicity excercise than as an aid to fuel efficiency.
