On a Milk and Parcels train - the milk came from United Dairies, North Elmham and these milk wagons were heading to Channelsea Sidings via Ipswich and then probably on to Ilford Dairy. This was the engine which worked the Royal Funeral train of the late King George V from Kings Lynn to Kings Cross on 23rd January 1936.
Peter Kerslake says "B17 Helmingham Hall looks a little uncared for in this picture at Norwich Thorpe, with its distinctive Pagoda roof just visible above the station buildings.
Relegated to an express parcels duty this is a somewhat secondary task for a 'Sandringham' which had dominated top link express passenger workings between Norwich and Liverpool Street until, with the arrival of the Britannias at Norwich and Stratford in early 1951 they were displaced from those tightly timed workings. The Sandringhams were still rostered on services between Cambridge and Kings Cross, however, as well as working regularly on secondary passenger duties including those between Liverpool Street and the Essex coast termini.
The first B17 withdrawal was 61628 Harewood House in September 1952 whilst 61668 Bradford City outlived all the others and was condemned in August 1960."
