61643 1950s March

61643 1950s March

Peter Kerslake says "March depot dated back to 1850, initially being enlarged in 1870 and again in 1884 and then further improved in 1932 as the nearby Whitemoor Marshalling Yards became an increasingly major freight centre.
61643 Champion Lodge was a March engine, one of nine of the class there in the mid 'fifties and as was usual custom for this depot its tender has been well filled as they always seemed to like to "pile them high" with coal at March for some unknown reason!
Built in 1936, and one of forty two of the second batch of the class constructed at Darlington 61643 remained in service until mid July 1958 with March depot itself being closed to steam in December 1963."
