1033 1935-08-08 North Blyth MPD
Ex-North Eastern Railway W.Worsdell '290' (LNER 'J77') class 0-6-0 Tanks Nos. LNER 1033 and LNER 1116. Built at Darlington in October 1899 (1033) and March 1901 (1116). Withdrawn in November 1945 (1033) and August 1957 as BR No. 68426 (1116).
The North Eastern Railway often 're-purposed' older locomotives by intesively rebuilding them. In the case of the 'J77s' they were transformed from Fletcher 'BTP' class 0-4-4 'Back Tanks', built in the 1870s into these 0-6-0 Tanks, closely resembling the 'J72' class and performing similar duties. This pair are seen under the smoke cowls inside North Blyth MPD in August 1935.
