Peter Kerslake says "From a likely date in either April or August 1955 and from the road bridge to the west of Newton Abbot station I photographed Laira's 7809 Childrey Manor which has just come on as pilot to assist a "County" over the banks to Plymouth on what I believe may be the 7.0a.m. from Swindon to Penzance, Reporting Number 420. 7813 Freshford Manor is on the right, both "Manors" the scruffy condition of the time typical of those unlucky enough to be used as regular pilot engines to and from Plymouth. It is no wonder that we lineside cameramen used to despair when a nice clean "Castle" or "King" was coupled inside one of these pilot engines, as was so often the case, particularly in the Summer months and especially on Saturdays. 7809 does not appear to have much coal in its tender, unlike Newton Abbot's own 7813 so perhaps the former has just been turned and watered on shed following an earlier run up from Plymouth.
