HR 116 1890s Perth HR MPD

HR 116 1890s Perth HR MPD

Highland Railway Jones 'Big Goods' (LMS '4F') class 4-6-0 No. 116. Built by Sharp Stewart & Co. of Glasgow in November 1894 and withdrawn in June 1936 as LMS No. 17279.

Judging by the loving pride and inventive tallow patterning that Perth Highland MPD's cleaners have bestowed on 116, the locomotive is pretty much brand spanking new. Utilised as the principal goods locomotives on the HR network, at the time they were the most powerful main line locomotives in Britain. They also occasionally performed passenger duties during the busy summer seasons on the HR network. The louvred chimney was a design speciality of David Jones and was retained on most of his locomotives into LMS days. Though by no means certain, it is generally considered that they were to assist in the drafting of the fire when running downhill.
