Captured on film here outside the little engine shed within the Meldon quarry complex , just to the west of Okehampton station , DS 682 , formerly Southern Region 30238 had replaced the Adams G6 numbered 272 , renumbered as DS3152 in late 1961 but she didn't last the ten years of her predecessor , being withdrawn from Meldon in December 1962 .
Meldon quarry , some thousand feet above sea level had been a source of ballast since 1897 although it wasn't until 1905 that the London and South Western Railway realised the potential of the vast amounts of stone available for widespread ballast use from the site.
