70022 1957-08-11 Cardiff General
A fine study of 70022 Tornado shown as being at Cardiff General,,the houses are Fitzhamon Embankment overlooking the river Taff, the shedplate is canton 86C,changed to 88A 1960, reporting number is also pre 1960, 735 is the Sat only 0800hrs Neyland to Paddington correct for Summer 1956/7/8, loco in back gear on the down middle road having come off its train, light engine to Canton and to further confirm it is summer the steam heat pipe has been removed from the front buffer beam, done May to September. Originally a Newton Abbot engine in its earlier days 70022 regularly worked the Devonian between Newton Abbot and Bristol Temple Meads before being reallocated to Old Oak Common. The unsightly handgrips in the smoke deflectors replaced the original handrails following the derailment of one of Cardiff Canton's Britannias ( which I think was 70026 ), such accident being attributed in part to restricted forward vision for the footplate crews caused by the original handrails
