Peter Kerslake says "Paddington bound, the up "Red Dragon" heads non stop through Slough with the last of the Cardiff Canton "Britannias" at its head in the shape of 70029 "Shooting Star".
Rostered regularly to the tightly timed workings between Cardiff and the Capital the locomotives on these workings would have been provided by the staff at Canton Depot before leaving on their outward run with sufficient coal to enable them to work back home again to Cardiff later that same day on a Welsh bound express, following just a turn round and water replenishment at Ranelagh yard, located just outside Paddington station.
From their arrival at Canton in September1952 the initial five members of the class were well regarded by all at Canton, later being joined by ten older and rather less well cared for members of the class in late 1956, transferred from Laira, Newton Abbot and Old Oak, but all fifteen were moved away to the Midland Region in late 1961".
