70029 1956-03-10 Bath
Peter Kerslake adds "A rather mundane duty for 70029 Shooting Star, running into Bath Spa with the 5.5am parcels from London to the West of England, its 86C (Cardiff Canton) clearly visible. The engine still retains its original hand rails on the smoke deflectors which were later removed and replaced by cut out hand holes, a consequence of the November 1955 Milton derailment of 70026 Polar Star which had been partlly attributed to these hand rails obscuring the driver's forward vision. Shooting Star was the last of the initial five Britannias allocated to Canton from new in 1952, and were joined in 1956 by the ten other Western Region members of the class, thereby resulting in the whole of the Western Region's allocation being at one depot."
