70022 1967-11-16 Grayrigg
With a good selection of parcels vehicles, some newly painted in maroon even this late.
Recorded here in colour in November1967, 70022 " Tornado " would end its life the following month, being condemned from its home at Carlisle Kingmoor in December1967 .
This " Britannia " had enjoyed a varied lifetime in service, allocated from new in Auguust1951 briefly to Plymouth's Laira Depot before moving to Newton Abbot in April1952 and then, in company with its nine sister engines from Laira and Old Oak Common, it went to Cardiff Canton in December1956 .
Whilst at Newton Abbot, and for some unknown reason being the sole member of its class to be shedded there, " Tornado " enjoyed a relatively easy life, working mainly over the undemanding route to and from Bristol Temple Meads on the " Devonian ", as the Shedmasters at Newton Abbot seemed to prefer to roster instead one of their well maintained " Castles " on the West to North workings and the " Tobay Express " duties to Paddington .
Following its move to the Midland Region from Canton in September1961 "Tornado " was to be found at Carlisle, Longsight, Aston and Rugby Motive Power Depots during its final years in service.
