Double heading with a 2-6-2T No 6155, it will be dropped off at the station. The little lads on the platform have spotted the Tank Engine acting as train engine to Canton's Ariel but the reason for its presence is a mystery, especially as the Capitals United was not booked to stop here at Swindon .A second view here this day shows the two locomotives with the Tank apparently about to be be uncoupled, but why it has been used to here at Swindon on this Top Link working is a bit of a mystery .Great Western Railway Regulations had since 1936 or so prohibited the use of locomotives without a front bogie from being coupled ahead of a train engine as a pilot unless it was for less than twelve miles, when I believe it was permitted and when the pilot engine would carry a single lamp on the smokebox door top bracket.
