70016 1950s Newport

70016 1950s Newport

This view of the Up Red Dragon, almost certainly dates from after 1956 as 70016, Ariel, formerly allocated to Plymouth's Laira shed, in company with its three sisters from that depot were, in addition to those in the class at Old Oak Common, all transferred to Cardiff Canton, joining the five newer members of the class which were already allocated there.By 1st. January, 1957, therefore, Canton had all of the fifteen Western Region Britannias on its allocation, putting them to good use on the tightly timed express workings between South Wales and Paddington, although by this period in time a number were overdue for overhaul and not in the best of condition.70016 had its first heavy overhaul at Crewe in June1956 and this photograph certainly dates from after that time .Just to confirm the suggested date, 70016 has the modified smoke deflectors which were changed after the Milton derailment in November 1955. (the deflector handrails were replaced by cut out handholds to improve signal sighting )
