70039 1960s Lincoln
70039 Sir Christopher Wren looks to be in fine condition here at Lincoln, and although the date is not specific it is likely that this was after it had left its former home at Norwich and duties on the former Great Eastern main line, and this view may possibly date from its short spell allocated to Immingham before moving to Carlisle Upperby in December1963. Warmly welcomed by those at both Norwich and Stratford sheds following their introduction in 1951 the Britannias revolutionised services between Liverpool Street and Norwich, permitting higher speeds over what was a well maintained track existing between those two centres, and a consequential improved timetable being introduced. One of the most demanding rosters for the Eastern region Britannias was a daily run from Parkeston Quay, on the Essex Coast, to Sheffield, with a homeward return run later that same day. 70039 Sir Christopher Wren had been the first of Norwich shed's Britannias to be moved from its North Norfolk home in company with 70040 and 70041 directly to Immingham in December1960 although Norwich had already lost 70036, 70037 and 70038 to March during the previous month before those three also went across to Immingham a year or so later. Whilst at Immingham the newly acquired and former Norwich allocated Britannias were found appropriate work on the Cleethorpes to Kings Cross express rosters in addition to perishables and fish duties from Grimsby, unlike the earlier members of the class which from June1961 had gone from Norwich to March where they were stored out of use and even threatened with being condemned, their salvation being the subsequent wholesale transfer of all Britannias to the Midland Region following overhaul at Crewe Works.
